Volvo XC60 Overview
The first customer unit of the XC60 midsize SUV was rolled out of the production lines from Volvo’s Torslanda plant in Sweden a few weeks ago. It was a T5 Inscription AWD model painted in crystal white colour scheme. The new-gen XC60 has a mountain to climb as it succeeds the bestselling mid-sized luxury in Europe. Yes, the XC60 through its lifespan endured massive global sales of nearly one million units and contributed to almost one-third of the entire Volvo sales worldwide.
It is the fourth vehicle underpinned by the in-house developed and flexible SPA vehicle architecture. Under the bonnet, the said model boasted the award-winning T8 twin-engine petrol connected to electric motor in the range-topping model. The plug-in hybrid unit produces a combined power output of 407 horsepower while capable of accelerating from zero to 100 kmph in just 5.3 seconds. Check for car loan interest calculator.
The much-awaited new generation 60 series Volvo SUV made its global debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in September. The 2018 Volvo XC60 replaces the existing model which has been in business since 2008 in foreign markets and it has recently been launched in India. Here is everything you need to know about the all-new XC60:
Volvo XC60 Design
The exterior of the Volvo XC60 is an eye-pleaser and face looks just the same as its big brother, the Volvo XC90. The designers of this latest SUV has given it a complete makeover to the front and subtle changes at the rear. The captivating headlights, ‘Thor’ hammer like signature headlamps are one of the defining features of this car. The chrome finished radiator grille adds a perfect robust, classy and luxurious look to this car, where the chrome finish is definitely a defining effort to offer the Volvo XC60 a contemporary look.
The Volvo XC60,s bumper gets air damns to keep the engine cool and the chrome trims just add visual value to it. The visible colour uniformity with body coloured bumpers, door handles, and rear view mirrors has been matched to perfection. Other add-ons includes are the roof rail and integrated antenna. Volvo XC60 specifications list is filled all over and is a real treat for the buyer to own an SUV with that long list.
Volvo XC60 Cabin
Like the exterior, the interior has been thoroughly refreshed and brought in line to current Volvo standards. The slab-like dash and the beige interior of the old car have made way for a far sportier cabin finished in some nice-looking brushed metal inserts and an attractive layout. Volvo has also used high grade leather, dull wood and chrome bits for the clean and rather cool looking dashboard. The lack of buttons and plenty of horizontal surfacing makes the whole dash clutter-free. The touchscreen display measures in at 9-inches and has the sort of functionality that’s like a tablet or an Apple device.
Nearly all of the XC60’s functions can be engaged via the large touchscreen and while the display is slick and responds really well, we are not sure if it’s the most convenient way especially on the move. As for the quality, the XC60 is well built and is right up there with the leaders but some of the interior bits could be better finished – the main volume controller and the engine start/stop knob feel a little flimsy. The XC60 has one of the best front seats (in terms of support) that we have experienced in a long time. They are large and adequately wide with just the right amount of contour and perfect cushioning. Also, it’s easy to find a suitable driving position in thanks to a plethora of steering and seat adjustment.
Similarly, the rear legroom is ample and the back seats are extremely supportive and leave little room for complaints – the backrest angle is near perfect and its nicely contoured for shoulder support. The only downside, as we see it, is the slightly less under-thigh support and the helmed in feeling that one may get from the small rear windows and the narrow ingress.
Volvo has truly gone to town with features and safety equipment. You get panoramic sunroof, head-up display, leather seats, paddle shifters, a sweet sounding Bowers and Wilkins audio system, 9-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, ambient lighting and lots more. The XC60 even gets heated and cooled front seats with massage function, heated rear seats and heated steering wheel, air suspension all-round and a plethora of driving assists including lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot assist. We tried out the lane-keep assist on the fast and windy ECR (East Coast Road) in Chennai and found the system to be fairly effective as long as the roads were properly marked.
Volvo XC60 Engine
The all-new XC60 gets the same 2.0-litre 235bhp/480Nm engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission that does duty in the XC90/V90 (power is sent to all four wheels). On cranking this motor, you will find some diesel clatter, but thankfully, superior cabin insulation keeps external noises at bay. On the go, despite the power delivery from this motor being linear, you can feel the strong midrange that picks up post 1500rpm and goes all the way to the 4000rpm limiter, and it undeniably makes for a wide power band.
The eight-speed gearbox (with paddle shifters) complements the character of the engine. However, we felt that the short shift lever was a little tricky to use when actuated in a hurry. To derive the best out of the motor, there are five preset drive modes that alter the engine/gearbox characteristics. On the go, the snazzy looking rotating switch requires extra effort to switch modes.
With Eco, Comfort, Off Road, Dynamic and Individual modes to choose from, Eco is meant for the best possible efficiency. It also makes for easy driving since the upshifts are quicker and the engine runs smooth all the time. That said, Comfort offers a slightly better response for a bit more excitement behind the wheel. This brings us to the Dynamic mode that offers a more spirited driving experience as the transmission clings on to lower gears for instant response. Individual mode, on the other hand, is customisable, and allows the driver to mix and match the preset modes to alter the steering, powertrain, brake and suspension responses. We found ourselves driving in this mode to match our personal requirements. To know more info on Volvo XC60 check Pasear-w
On the suspension front, the all-new XC60 gets an air suspension setup for all wheels and the driving modes also have preset adjustments for the damping characteristics. Off-road mode can only be activated while doing speeds of up to 40kmph, and it gets the system to channel more torque to the rear wheels. Additionally, ground clearance is automatically increased to a maximum of 223mm. We shall reserve our judgement of the new XC60’s off-roading skills for a later date since we didn’t get the opportunity to get off the road.
In Eco/Comfort mode the ride at low speeds is great and although you can hear the suspension working its way over harsh bumps, you never really feel them in the cabin. However, there is some up and down movement at higher speeds. But as soon as you shift into Dynamic mode, the ride gets noticeably flatter, and the XC60 drives with good stability at highway speeds.
Volvo XC60 Riding
The old XC60 wasn’t all that great dynamically but this 2017 model is a lot better. First of all, the steering is no longer vague off-center and it weighs up nicely as you up the pace – it’s fairly direct and heavy (though not to the point that its cumbersome) in Dynamic, giving you plenty of confidence through high speed corners. The ride quality, too, has improved with the 2017 model exhibiting plenty of composure over a few bad sections that we managed to find on our test route. Sure, you do hear the suspension working but there is hardly any lateral movement or unsettling jolts. On the highway, the XC60 remains composed with just a hint of up and down movement. Overall, it’s a great long distance car, one that will cover up kilometers for hours without leaving the occupants fatigued.
Volvo XC60 Safety
Known for its safety, Volvo’s XC60 has ventilated disk brakes for both the front as well as rear wheels and no compromises when it comes to installation of airbags, you get safety airbags for every passenger. While the automatic height adjustable seat belts and the intelligent driver information system are one of the highlights of Volvo XC60 Braking and Safety features.

Volvo XC60 Verdict
As far as the Volvo XC60 handling is concerned, the new PowerPulse engine is a very powerful unit with minimum lag and quick responding gearbox. The new 4-cylinder engine is a clean burning fuel and it is efficienct as well. It holds it lines very well through fast corners and Volvo’s massive safety systems means you are absolutely safe while doing so. Thinking of the rough road ride, the Violvo XC60 can glide through big patches easily with its air suspension system.
